We're now in countdown mode. We leave Tuesday evening and are now trying to squeeze every last minute out of the beach.
It rained a little yesterday morning, but the afternoon was beautiful. Lots of sunshine. Then we played "Phase 10" (a card game) with Jean-Pierre and Troy throughout cocktail hour and up through the sunset, which again was glorious.

Mark's new Kindle Fire arrived on Monday and he has been getting used to it this past week. He says he expects I will now have Kindle envy. It's possible. I've already gone through "turtle envy," after he went through phone case envy.

Let me explain.
I recently got a new blue Skull Candy case for my iPhone. Mark had serious envy; he didn't like his existing case. So he got the new case - the same as mine. The result: both our phones looked the same. How gay is that? But then we kept picking up the other's phone. Mark's solution was to get a turtle sticker to put on the back of his phone in order to identify it:
That's when my turtle envy kicked in. I tried not to say anything, but Mark was able to pick up on it. So he suggested I look for a sticker for my phone, too. The result:
In case anyone's wondering, he lost a back fin when I was trying to peel the sticker away from the paper.
We're off to the beach again today and are planning to have supper there this evening with Jean-Pierre and Troy, then stay to watch the full moon come up over the beach. Should be spectacular.
We saw the moon last night as we were coming up and over the hill between Little and Big Beaches. When we got to the top of the hill and looked over the scene before us, it was glorious. I'm getting goose bumps just writing about it. The virtually full moon was hanging in the sky, casting its light over, panning from left to right, the slopes of Haleakala visible in the distance, the vegetation cascading down to the beach, the beach itself and then the ocean waves, a sailboat bobbing out in the bay, its dark outline in contrast to the moon-dappled water.
Mark stopped and took a picture of the two of us with the moon in the background, but of course it didn't capture the scene that had greeted our eyes. Even so, it did capture some of the contentment and wonder we were feeling (with some Photoshop help).
We walked along Big Beach close to the water, mesmerized by the effect of the moonlight on the waves, which looked like ribbons of liquid mercury unfurling themselves on the beach. It was, quite simply, magical.
I am just reading some of these that I had missed. What an amazing, amazing trip this was for both of you!
ReplyDeleteI love your last line: so fluid and poetic, gorgeously magical!
